Today I’m going to write a review about <Charlie and the Chocolate Factory>, which is very friendly book to people. Firstly, this book is about one boy named ‘Charlie Bucket’ who lives in extremely poor environment, and his adventure in the Enormous Chocolate Factory. In the story, the point that Charlie really loved to eat chocolate but because of his poor condition, he could only get one chocolate bar once a year, on his birthday-stimulated my interest. I can’t really understand Charlie’s birthday present because for me, I always got big ones like bicycle, or a phone. Chocolate bar is just the everyday-snack for me. It means, for me and my school friends, it’s more than a common thing. We just can get it from one store, paying our own money given by our parents. I felt little bit pitiful to Charlie. If I can, I would buy many chocolates (not tons of, because I’m not that rich-) to Charlie. Anyway, the biggest thing that tortured little Charlie was that- there was the most largest Chocolate factory in the world, and most famous factory in the world, also most popular factory on the Earth. Every morning Charlie had to smell the most delicious kinds of scent (of course chocolate). Think about it! You really love to do something, or you just love that something. But you can’t touch it, you are just allowed to smell it! How painful is it! Especially if it is a food! In Korea, there is such a saying- a pie in the sky. It can explain all of these situations! Anyhow, there is a fact that I realized by reading through this book. That is- the products that coming out from Mr. Wonka’s factory (Sorry for not mentioning this name- Mr. Willy Wonka. The owner of this brilliant factory and a genious.) were not ordinary sweets! In chapter 2, page 22, Granpa Joe (who is ‘shrivelled as prunes’ on page 19 says.) said about Mr. Willy Wonka like ‘what a man he is’. By reading through chapter 2, I perfectly understood that every single one of this family member loves to eat Mr. Wonka’s sweet products, and respect him by reaching a state of grace. Me too, felt really hungry and love to eat Mr. Wonka’s sweets. Because normally I love to eat a chocolate (not a candy, I hate candies, when I chew them, all particles of it gets in between my teeth. ) just same with other children.
Originally, Mr. Wonka’s factory was just same with other factories, employ the workers and work with them. But unfortunately, CEO of other factories were green with envy, and started to put spies in Mr. Wonka’s factory, and steal the secret recipe of the factory. Because of this other factories started to make a product just same with Mr. Wonka’s factory, and Mr. Willy Wonka get really upset by this. Eventually, he fire all of the workers in his factory, and closed the doors of the factory. I felt little bit angry to Willy Wonka. He just don’t think about other people, I think. The workers had to earn the money for their beloved family, and he just crossed off the wishes of the workers. I heard in these days, many people found hard to get a job. Some of the fired workers from Mr. Wonka’s factory might get a job, but I guess most of them were unable to find a fine job for buying all of the things that their family might need. That is a real pitiful thing.
Anyway, Mr. Willy Wonka found another workers who were exactly the right people that he was looking for. On page 93, on chapter 16, Mr. Wonka says like-
‘The Oompa-Loompas, imported direct from Loompalad. Nothing but thick jungles infested by the most dangerous beasts in the world- hornswogglers and snozzwangers and those terrible wicked whangdoodles. A whangdoodle would eat ten Oompa-Loompas for breakfast and come galloping back for a second helping. When I went out there, I found the little Oompa-Loompas living in tree houses. They had to live in tree houses to escape from the whangdoodles and the hornswogglers and the snozzwangers.’ By this, I understood the details that how can Mr. Wonka can get a perfect workers for him. He promised the Oompa- Loompas that they can get a cacao bean for a monthly wage. I should firstly mention that Oompa-Loompas are crazy at cacao bean. They really love to eat it. The special characteristic of them is-their height is no higher than one child’s knee. I cannot understand this because all of the things and machines in Mr. Wonka’s factory is set for a normal human’s height, than how can they work in his factory? It was a mystery but in this book, the author have not mentioned about this mystery. But it’s a just a story, I believe the Oompa-Loopas can even play a basketball game with adults, in this book.
So as people out of the factory had a mystery. How can people go in even the door is closed? By this, all of the people on the Earth who knows Willy Wonka’s factory, wanted to go in the factory and see what happened to the factory. At this exact point, on page 33, chapter 5, the newspaper says-
‘I, Willy Wonka, have decided to allow five children- just five, mind you, and no more- to visit my factory this year. These lucky five will be shown around personally by me, and they will be allowed to see all the secrets and the magic of my factory. Then, at the end of the tour, as a special present, all of them will be given enough chocolates and sweets to last them for the rest of their lives! So watch out for the Golden Tickets! Five Golden Tickets have been printed on golden paper, and these five Golden Tickets have been hidden underneath the ordinary wrapping paper of five ordinary bars of chocolate. These five chocolate bars may be anywhere- in any shop in any street in any town in any country in the world- upon any counter where Wonka’s sweets are sold. And the five lucky finders of these five Golden Tickets are the only ones who will be allowed to visit my factory and see what it’s like now inside! Good luck to you all, and happy hunting!(signed Willy Wonka.)’. It’s real an adventure! I can imagine the situations of all of the shops that Wonka’s sweets are sold -choked with the people crazy at the Golden Ticket- , and I also really wish to get it! Grandma and Grandpas
worried about a problem that Charlie cannot get the golden ticket because the chance that he can get a Golden Ticket was so short and small-Just once a year. Bucket family hoped Charlie can get a Golden Ticket on Charlie’s upcoming birthday.
But unfortunately Charlie don’t get the Golden Ticket. Everyone who were looking at Charlie, and Charlie himself, all disappointed by the result.
On chapter 11 <The Miracle>, page 64, a real miracle happens to Charlie. He bought 2 chocolates --used the money which was on the street, under the snow-- and underneath the second chocolate bar, there was a ‘brillian flash of gold’. It was a GOLDEN TICKET! I was really surprised at this sentence, I did not really guessed Charlie might get it! But he did, and he ran to the home, and inform this big new to his family. There was about ten seconds absolute silence in the room. Next, I really laughed very big, because on page 68 it says ‘this old fellow of ninety-six and a half, who hadn’t been out of bed these last twenty years, jumped on to the floor and started doing a dance of victory in his pajamas. “Yippeeeeeeeeee!” he shouted. “Three cheers for Charlie! Hip, hip, hooray!”’ I can’t believe this old Grandpa has danced on the floor, but I guess that’s a happy enough occasion.
The family decided that Grandpa Joe will be going to the factory with Charlie. The adventure starts, and other characters, which are-
‘AUGUSTUS GLOOP- a greedy boy
VERUCA SALT-a girl who is spoiled by her parents
VIOLET BEAUREGARDE-a girl who chew gum all day long
MIKE TEAVEE-a boy who does nothing but watch television’
All of these children fail to get the huge amount of sweets that is the prize for
the day, by not listening to Mr. Wonka and act in individuals, and taste anything looks like tasty. But Charlie didn’t, and he survived in this adventure. Mr. Wonka said he’s very happy to meat Charlie and congratulate Charlie. Also he said he was looking for the person that will own the factory after him, because he said he’s already very old. Mr. Wonka, Charile and Granpa Joe get on to an elevator made with a glass, and fly straight to Charile’s house, and meet all of the family. Charile and Granpa Joe moved the bed, dad and mom in the elevator. Finally the story ends.
I think this story starts with not that happy story and at the end, all the happy things happen together to the poor family. I think it’s very fair for Bucket family because in the story, I can know that Charlie’s dad worked very hard in a toothpaste company. I guess, it’s not a well-paying job. But he did his best to work on it, and he was able to feed a family. But it was not enough for this bi family, but Charlie own the Chocolate factory, and they will be rich enough for live the rest of their lives happily ever after. Oh, do I should call the factory ‘Mr. Bucket’s Chocolate factory’?
