Charlotte´s web is a very nice and interesting book about a spider called Charlotte saving a pig´s life with an idea nobody could thought of.
In the first chapter Fern, the daughter of the farmers the Arables, saves the life of a ranted pig. Because her father, Mr. Arable, wanted to kill the pig just because it´s a rant.
Fern gave the little pig a name: Wilbur. Wilbur was Ferns best friend even he was just a pig they did everything together. But after a while Wilbur grew a lot, and Ferns parents told her that now is the time to sell Wilbur, because he still a pig and pigs usually got sold in that time. Fern was very sad about that, but fortunately her father gave her the chance to sell Wilbur to her aunt and uncle, Homer and Edith Zuckerman, who lived near the Arable´s Farm.
Now in the book we don´t hear so much about Fern and her family anymore, the story has a little twist because now it seems that Wilbur is the main character before it seemed that Fern is the main character in the book and also we experience that Wilbur and all the other animals are able to talk and only Fern is able to understand them.
Wilbur lives now in the barn cellar of the Zuckermans, but he feels lonely, Fern can´t visit him every day because she has to go to school. And the other animals…Well there is the goose, the goose is very active she talks a lot and also very fast sometimes it´s hard to understand her and she also doesn´t want to play with Wilbur because she has goslings coming. And there is the lamb and the sheep, the lamb is very arrogant and selfish it doesn´t want to play with Wilbur too, and the sheep they are probably too old…And there is Templeton, Templeton is a rat he lives in the trough from Wilbur and saves everything he can he also eats everything he can and he´s very rude, arrogant and selfish so he probably doesn’t want to play with Wilbur too…
But then CHARLOTTE. One day Wilbur heard a tiny, pleasant and thin voice saying that Wilbur would be a good friend and he should go to sleep now and in the next day he will see her. The next day Wilbur met Charlotte the first time. She was a beautiful, big grey spider with a very polite and posh language, and she was also very calm and clever. In the next days and weeks Wilbur and Charlotte got very good friends.
Now it seems that the main character changed from Wilbur finally to Charlotte because from now on in every chapter Charlotte has an important role.
And then finally the summer came what also means that Ferns was able to visit the barn almost every day. Fern met Charlotte and she also liked her actually everybody liked Charlotte even she lamb and the sheep. And one day the goslings came! It actually were seven goslings but one egg didn´t hatch. The gander gave the egg that didn´t hatch to Templeton but with a warning. If Templeton tries to steal one of the little goslings and eat it he would show no mercy no him.
After a while in the barn cellar bad news came… The oldest sheep told Wilbur what will happen to him in Christmas time. The Zuckermans would kill and eat him for Christmas dinner!!! Wilbur got in panic! He was so scared about the fact that he will die really soon! But then Charlotte told him to calm down she´s going to think about a plan to save Wilbur´s life.
Charlottes plan: Charlotte had thought of a plan for a long time and then she came to a conclusion. People are way easier to trick than bugs are!
She tried to trick the Zuckermans by she wrote the words: “Some Pig” in her web (Therefore the title: “Charlotte´s Web”) As Lurvy, the hired man from the Zuckermans, the words “Some Pig” above the pigs stall saw, he ran to Mr. Zuckerman and they both stared at those two words...
Why Charlotte chose the words “Some Pig”: Because Lurvy the Zuckermans and everybody else who saw those things will think that maybe Wilbur wrote those words and a pig that is able to write words is an unusual pig! And who wants to kill a pig with a special ability?
Charlotte´s plan worked very well the Zuckermans told everybody that a “miracle” had happed at their farm. But after a while Charlotte thought that there should be a new word in the web. And together with the other animals and Fern they chose the word: “Terrific”
Characters I didn´t name in the reflection:
Avery Arable: The first and only son of the Arables and Ferns bigger brother. He likes to catch little animals and insects. That´s why he also tried to catch Charlotte. But the rotten egg from Templeton saved Charlottes life. As Avery once stumbled he fell into Wilbur´s trough. And underneath was the rotten egg, it broke and the awful smell of a broken, rotten egg made Fern and Avery run away.
My favorite Character from the book:
My favorite character from the book is the goose! I like her because she is very funny (especially the way she speaks) and she´s not like the other characters. She is kind of a mix of Wilbur and Charlotte, because she is a little naïve like Wilbur but she also can be very serious and calm like Charlotte.
Why I don´t like Wilbur and Charlotte, like many other people do, is because Wilbur is cute, but he is a little too childish and naïve for me and with Charlotte it’s the same it´s just the opposite. I like Charlotte because she´s clever and smart, but sometimes she is too calm and too posh she could be a little more active.
Why many people like Charlotte and Wilbur:
I think it is because Charlotte and Wilbur are the main Characters in the book. And also the author, EB. White, made the readers like them. I think she did that by putting them always in the center of attention. And they both don´t have a bad personality, plus I think it would be very strange when the book is called “Charlotte´s Web” and nobody likes her.
What do I think about the book?
Well… I think the book has an amazing story and I really like animals! So I think “Charlotte´s Web” is a good book to read for everyone. Because for everyone there is a character they like, because every character in the book has an individual personality. So everybody who reads the book has at least one favorite character.
